چکیده

Epinephrine and calcium possess both cardiac inotropic and vasopressor activity. In addition, epinephrine's cardiovascular effects are mediated via increases in intracellular calcium. As a result, many clinicians administer the two agents together in an attempt to augment their effects. Although this approach seems rational, it has never been proven effective. We evaluated the cardiovascular and hyperglycemic actions of epinephrine (10 and 30 ng/kg/min), with and without calcium chloride administration (10 mg/kg bolus followed by 2 mg/kg/hr infusion), in

CLINICAL INVESTIGATIONS Effect of chronic intercurrent medication with β-adrenoceptor blockade or calcium channel entry blockade on postoperative silent myocardial ischaemia†

We have examined observational data from four published studies investigating the incidence of postoperative silent myocardial ischaemia (post-SMI) for the effects of chronic intercurrent therapy with β-adrenoceptor blockade or chronic calcium channel entry blockade. A total of 453 patients underwent ambulatory ECG monitoring before and for 2 days after non-cardiac surgery; 79 patients were rec...

Efficacy and safety of low-dose propranolol versus diltiazem in the prophylaxis of supraventricular tachyarrhythmia after coronary artery bypass grafting.

OBJECTIVE Supraventricular tachyarrhythmias (SVT) complicate postoperative management after coronary bypass surgery in about 30% of all patients. Though a prophylactic treatment both with beta-adrenergic blocking agents and the calcium antagonist diltiazem has been used for the prevention of post-operative SVT, no study yet has performed a prospective comparison of the efficacy of these therapi...

Frailty effects and euro score system evaluation in postoperative outcomes of cardiac surgery patients

Background: Several scoring systems are available to evaluate the cardiac surgery risk. Frailty increases the risk of adverse outcomes after surgery. The Frailty evaluation system is a relatively new method, and in this study, we compared the frailty scoring method with the conventional Euroscore method. Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on 88 elderly patients (over 65 years of...

Influence of thyroidectomy on postoperative serum calcium level regarding serum vitamin D status. A prospective study

Background: Hypocalcemia is a well-recognized complication after total thyroidectomy. Hypovitaminosis D may have additional effect in the development of hypocalcemia. This study aimed to determine the effect of total thyroidectomy on postoperative serum calcium in patients with and without hypovitaminosis D. Methods: This prospective study was performed on patients who underwent total...
